A poll showed that at least 56% of American citizens support trying former President Donald J. Trump in the Senate( the higher chamber of Congress) as well as preventing him from holding any future government office.
According to a poll conducted jointly by "ABC News" with the research firm Ipsos, 56% of respondents believe that former President Trump should be condemned and prevented from holding public office, while 43% opposed this and voted against his conviction.
According to the poll, 15% of Republicans support the charges against the former president, while the percentage of support for accusations against Trump among Democrats is 92%.
The poll was conducted from 5 to 6 February 2021, with 508 people participating, and the error rate was 4.8 percentage points.
Trump's trial in the Senate is due to begin on Wednesday, February 9.
In the indictment against Trump, Democrats in the US Congress blamed him for the Capitol riots on January 6, and in addition, prosecutors reject the Republican argument that a president whose term of office has ended cannot be removed from office.
According to the accusations, Trump is subject to impeachment and disqualification to hold public office in the future. This would deprive him of the right to participate in the 2024 elections.
Trump was impeached by the US House of Representatives on January 13 for inciting unrest.
The Senate is studying the decision to impeach and convict Trump and prevent him from holding office in the future.
