A police officer was fatally shot, and a suspect critically injured during a confrontation in Greenville, North Texas, late Monday night, authorities reported on Tuesday.
Officer Cooper Dawson, aged 27, succumbed to his injuries around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday at a local hospital, according to Greenville Police Chief Chris Smith. The incident occurred approximately 70 kilometers northeast of Dallas.
Speaking at a press conference, Chief Smith expressed the community's grief.
The shooting unfolded as officers attempted to apprehend a suspect with multiple outstanding warrants. According to Smith, the suspect fled on foot, prompting Dawson and another officer to pursue him.
During the chase, the suspect opened fire, striking Officer Dawson. Despite his injuries, Dawson returned fire, hitting the suspect. The suspect was transported to the hospital and remains in critical condition.
Authorities have not yet released the suspect's identity, and investigations are ongoing.
