On Saturday, officials in Pennsylvania reported a violent incident at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York, where an armed man entered the intensive care unit and took hospital staff hostage before being neutralized by law enforcement.
The attacker, carrying a bag containing a handgun and plastic ties, proceeded directly to the ICU and opened fire, injuring three hospital employees—a doctor, a nurse, and a janitor.
During the ensuing exchange of gunfire, one police officer was fatally shot while two others sustained injuries.
The fallen officer has been identified as Andrew Dorati from the West York Police Department, who was responding to a mutual aid call at the time of the incident.
Hospital officials confirmed that although the attacker was killed during the confrontation, no patients were harmed.
Security forces remain on the scene to control the situation and ensure the safety of everyone at the hospital.
