Polish President Andrzej Duda has called on Washington to deploy American nuclear weapons in Poland, according to the Financial Times.
Duda reportedly raised the issue during a meeting with Keith Kellogg, former U.S. National Security Advisor for Ukraine under the Trump administration.
In an interview with the newspaper, Duda stated that it is "obvious" that the U.S. could move its nuclear warheads currently stationed in the U.S. or Western Europe to Polish territory.
The Polish president justified his request by pointing out that NATO's borders shifted eastward in 1999 when Poland joined the alliance.
Therefore, he argued that NATO's nuclear infrastructure should also be moved eastward after 26 years.
This request comes as tensions between NATO and Russia continue to escalate amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Experts believe that deploying nuclear weapons in Eastern Europe could further provoke Moscow and increase geopolitical tensions in the region.
