Poland has announced plans to extend a NATO fuel pipeline from the German border to strengthen the alliance’s military logistics in Eastern Europe.

Deputy Defence Minister Cezary Tomczyk confirmed that the project will create a 300-kilometre fuel pipeline connecting the German border with the headquarters of Poland’s pipeline operator in Bydgoszcz.

The project is expected to cost around 20 billion zloty (about 5.5 billion US dollars), with NATO headquarters allocating the required funds.

Tomczyk explained that the extension will form part of a strategic network originally built during the Cold War to prepare for potential conflict with the Soviet Union.

He noted that in the 1960s and 1970s, NATO established a vast network of pipelines as a precaution against confrontation with Moscow.

He stressed the importance of ensuring a steady supply of equipment, ammunition, and fuel on the battlefield, underlining the project’s significance for modern security needs.

On Friday, a signing ceremony was held at the Military Education Centre in Warsaw to formalize an initial agreement on integrating Poland’s pipeline system with NATO’s broader infrastructure.
