A pilot was killed after a small aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff near the city of Oldenburg in northern Germany, local police said on Wednesday.
Authorities confirmed that the plane went down near Hatten Airport in an open area, where it was completely destroyed upon impact. Firefighters quickly responded to the scene and managed to extinguish a fire that broke out following the crash.
According to police, the pilot was on a return flight to Switzerland, where he was based. Officials also noted that the aircraft’s emergency parachute system was not deployed, though the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Around 50 emergency personnel were deployed to the site as authorities continue efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
