Health authorities in Philippines announced on Sunday that they have detected the first case of the new mutated COVID-19 variant, Lambda.
The authorities added in a statement that the variant was found in a 35-year-old woman without expressing if she is coming abroad or not. However, they are searching for persons who were in direct contact with her.
The patient did not suffer from any symptoms and she has recovered after being quarantined for 10 days.
It is worthy to mention that Japanese scientists discovered last month that the new COVID-19 variant, Lambda, is highly infectious, in addition, it is able to evade immunity.
Detected for the first time in Peru in 2020, Lambda variant is now spreading worldwide, and it is the dominant variant in Latin America.
In the same context, the World Health Organization (WHO) reflected last week that this new variant could be resistant to vaccines. However, the international organization classified the spreading strain as “Variant of interest.”
It is worthy to mention that Delta variant is still sparking the world’s concern as it exists now in more than 80 countries, and it caused significant surge in number of daily infectious in Europe.
