Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called on all members of his Cabinet to submit their resignations in a sweeping move to reset his administration following midterm elections that saw opposition candidates gain ground in the Senate.
In a statement released on Thursday, Marcos described the move as a bold step aimed at recalibrating the government to better meet the expectations of the public.
He acknowledged that the current state of governance is no longer business as usual, emphasizing that the people have voiced their desire for concrete results rather than political rhetoric or excuses.
According to the official statement, Marcos asked for the voluntary resignation of all Cabinet members to allow for a comprehensive review of each ministry’s performance.
The decision follows a significant shift in the political landscape after last week’s elections, where the opposition secured a stronger presence in the legislative branch.
The government clarified that the mass resignation request is intended to give the president space to assess each department’s effectiveness and determine which officials will remain as he redefines the administration's priorities moving forward.
At least 21 Cabinet officials, including Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, have either submitted their resignations or expressed their willingness to comply with the president’s directive.
