The gunman, who opened fire on police Wednesday as they were serving a drug warrant in Philadelphia’s Nicetown neighborhood, injuring six officers, has been arrested, according to US authorities.

The suspect surrendered to police and was taken into custody.

The officers were taken to Temple University Hospital. All the officers are in stable condition and have been released.

The suspect reportedly live-streamed the shootout.

"Suspect is in custody. SWAT is still clearing the house," Philadelphia Police Sgt. Eric Gripp tweeted early Thursday.

The shooting started at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and was followed by a standoff that lasted nearly eight hours.

“Before the standoff ended, negotiators had been trying to communicate with the shooter, but the gunman was only picking up the phone without answering,” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross Jr. told reporters.

“Authorities trying to convince him to surrender were making a little bit of progress. The man's attorney joined a phone call and tried to assure the suspect that police were not going to harm him,” he added.

Earlier this month, twenty nine people were killed, and dozens others were injured in mass  shooting incidents in Ohio and Texas.

The two deadly incidents reopened the US gun control debate. Democratic leaders in congress have already called for gun control.
