Pfizer officially requested the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to have an emergency approval of its COVID-19 vaccine for children aged between five and eleven years old, the leading drugmaker announced on Thursday.

It also added on Twitter: “With new cases in children in the US continuing to be at a high level, this submission is an important step in our ongoing effort against COVID19."

“We’re committed to working with the FDA with the ultimate goal of helping protect children against this serious public health threat."

Therefore, the FDA scheduled a meeting for its panel of advisers to examine the application of the drugmaker to be given to children on October 26.

In the same context, the company affirmed that its vaccine is safe and effective for children aged above five.

The request of the corporation came as about 27% of the current COVID-19 infection in the US are children, this percentage could be increased due to the beginning of the academic year, and school gatherings.

FDA previously approved the vaccine for emergency use for children aged between 12 and 15 years old and any person who is above 16 years old.
