Peru parliament Rejects to Bring Forward Elections amid Protests

The Peruvian Parliament rejected, on Friday, a bill that demanded bringing elections forward by more than two years.

The bill exhibited to move the elections from 2026 to December 2023 received only 49 votes in favor. However, it received 33 against 23 abstentions. The bill needed at least 87 votes to pass.

The country faces protests and violence since outcasting of President Pedro Castillo. Until now 18 persons died in the latest clashes in Peru.

Castillo was removed from office after attempting to dissolve the legislature and announced that he would rule by decree. 

On Friday, Castillo's detention was extended by 18 months which motivated more protests as Castillo's supporters took to the streets.

Therefore, a state of emergency was declared in the country, and some escalations erupted between Castillo's supporters and military personnel.
