Peru has announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Mexico after Mexican authorities granted political asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, who faces charges of “conspiracy against the state” in her home country.

Peru’s Foreign Minister stated that Mexico had taken an “unfriendly action” toward Lima by offering asylum to the former official.

Chávez was appointed Prime Minister of Peru in November 2022 during the presidency of leftist leader Pedro Castillo but resigned just days later in December following a major political crisis.

Peruvian prosecutors later charged former President Pedro Castillo with attempted conspiracy against the state after he tried to dissolve Congress in December 2022, a move the judiciary declared unconstitutional.

Betssy Chávez now faces criminal charges for her alleged involvement in the same attempt to dissolve Congress, according to Russia Today.
