A drone attack in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region on Saturday killed one person and injured another, local officials and aid workers reported, signalling renewed tensions between federal forces and Tigray fighters.
The attacks targeted two trucks near the towns of Inticho and Gindipta, approximately 20 kilometres apart. Aid workers confirmed the strikes, which reportedly involved food and cooking supplies, though government-aligned sources claimed the trucks were carrying weapons.
The Ethiopian army has been named by a local official as responsible, but no evidence was provided.
Tigray endured a brutal two-year conflict that ended in late 2022, leaving hundreds of thousands dead due to direct violence, famine, and a collapsed healthcare system. Sporadic clashes have continued, particularly in western Tigray over disputed territories and delays in disarming regional forces.
Last week, Ethiopian Airlines suspended flights to Tigray, and residents rushed to withdraw cash from local banks amid rising insecurity.
