One person was killed and five others injured during clashes between protesters and security forces on the island of Anjouan in the Comoros amid growing unrest over rising fuel prices.
According to prosecutors in the city of Mutsamudu, the violence erupted in the Mbaji area as demonstrations intensified across the island nation.
The unrest began after a meeting between the mayor of Mirontsi and a local fishermen’s association that had suspended operations since Wednesday in protest against soaring fuel costs.
Roads in Mutsamudu, the capital of Anjouan, were reportedly blocked with stones as demonstrators confronted security forces.
Authorities confirmed that a judicial investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatality and the violence linked to the protests.
The clashes reflect mounting economic pressure across the island nation as rising energy prices continue to fuel public anger and social instability.
