A man was killed and two others were critically injured in a stabbing attack in Sydney, authorities confirmed Tuesday.
Emergency services were called to a busy commercial street in western Sydney around 10 a.m. local time after reports that a man had stabbed multiple people before fleeing on foot, according to the New South Wales Police.
Paramedics treated three individuals with serious injuries at the scene. The victim who died was a man believed to be in his 30s or 40s, while a 22-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman were rushed to hospital in critical condition.
Police apprehended the suspect shortly after the attack during a local operation. Officials said the man is known to authorities for minor offenses and several past mental health incidents. He is expected to appear in court later Tuesday.
New South Wales Police Superintendent Simon Glasser said the investigation is in its early stages and the motive remains unknown. Glasser added that the attack appears to have been random, describing the incident as a horrific event that occurred just before lunchtime in the busy Merrylands area.
