The US Department of Defense is seeking an additional $80 billion in funding to cover the costs of military operations related to the conflict with Iran, according to a report by the The Wall Street Journal.

The report said Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg has been discussing the funding request with lawmakers as the Trump administration faces pressure to provide a full accounting of recent military expenditures.

Pentagon officials have reportedly warned that operational funds could run low by the summer unless Congress approves the new spending package. The proposed funding would also support other missions, including border security operations and anti-drug trafficking efforts in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific.

The request is expected to spark debate in Congress, where some lawmakers are demanding a formal authorization for military action against Iran before approving additional funding.

The Pentagon previously estimated the cost of the Iran conflict at $29 billion, but current projections suggest the overall bill has risen significantly.
