The US Department of Defense has suspended the planned deployment of more than 4,000 US soldiers to Europe, according to reports, in a move that reportedly surprised several military officials.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the decision was communicated during a meeting involving US military leadership in Europe and senior Army officials.
The troops, part of a combat brigade, had been scheduled for a nine-month rotational deployment to Poland as part of ongoing US military operations in Europe.
The US Army had previously announced in March that the brigade would replace another unit under a routine troop rotation program.
However, reports indicate that some personnel and military equipment had already begun moving towards their deployment destinations before the operation was abruptly halted.
The unexpected decision reportedly created confusion among military officials who had not anticipated a suspension of the deployment plan.
The Pentagon has not publicly explained the reasons behind the move.
