Democrats have become more likely than ever to impeach the outgoing U.S. President Doanld Trump, after news reports that Vice President Mike Pence had hinted at the possibility of impeachment based on the 25th amendment of the Constitution.

Distancing himself from the man who had supported him for years in the White House, Pence determined one final condition to respond to calls for him to oust Trump based on the 25th amendment of the constitution, according to CNN.

Pence has reportedly told his aids that he has not ruled out an effort to invoke the 25th Amendment and wants to preserve the option in case President Trump becomes more unstable.

The source said there is some concern inside Pence's team that there are risks to invoking the 25th Amendment or even to an impeachment process, as Trump could take some sort of rash action putting the nation at risk.

To invoke the amendment, Pence and a majority of Trump's cabinet members must declare him unable to perform the duties of the presidency. Amendment 25, was adopted after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, with the aim of resolving the situations in which illness or death prevents the president from performing his duties, or resigning.

Trump had called on his supporters to go out and rally in parallel with a congressional session last Wednesday to certify Biden's victory, but the crowds stormed the capitol and controlled it for a short period before they were expelled.

A police officer and four others were killed during the confrontations that shocked the world.

CNN quoted sources saying that Pence has finally "gotten a glimpse of POTUS's vindictiveness," one source said, using the acronym for President of the United States.

Two sources familiar with the matter say Trump is angry at Pence and the latter is disappointed and saddened by the former.

Trump's role in encouraging chaos last Wednesday caused a widening rift within the Republican Party.

Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski said Trump should stand down immediately, and Republican Senator Pat Tommy said Trump "has committed crimes that deserve accountability."
