US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has accused the Senate of covering up President Donald Trump after the senators on Friday refused to summon witnesses or offer new documents at the president's trial.

More witnesses would offer information that might shed light on the illegal behavior of the president.

The Democrats accused Trump of abusing the power of his office when he decided to hold security aids allotted by Congress to Ukraine.

Pelosi said in a statement issued on Friday evening that the Republicans vote in the Senate against calling more witnesses and presenting convincing documents in the framework of accountability measures makes them partners in covering up the president.

She added that it is a sad day for America to see the leader of the Republican Majority Leader,  Senator (Mitch) McConnell ask the chief justice of the US Supreme Court to preside over a vote that doesn’t abide by the judicial rules of our nation and its institutions that support the constitution and the rule of law.

Pelosi considered that the decision of impeachment of Donald Trump, which was approved by the House of Representatives is in place forever.  She warned that there would be acquittal but there is no acquittal without trial.

She went on to say that there is no trial without witnesses and evidence.

On the other hand, Trump's chief prosecutor, Democratic Representative Adam Schiff, considered that the president's acquittal would mean normalization of the lack of respect for the law while Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that Trump's acquittal does not mean anything if members of the Senate refuse to call additional witnesses.

Such an acquittal will be the fruit of a false trial.

The Senate had thwarted by a slim majority (51 to 49 votes) the Democrats' efforts to summon former White House National Security Adviser John Bolton and other senior presidential advisers to appear in front of the senators during the trial to hear their testimonies.
