Press Release
In Cairo on 4 and 5 July, the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean will present the priorities of Parliament’s incoming presidency.
A delegation of 10 MEPs will take part in the 10th Speakers' Summit and the 19th plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM), taking place in Cairo on 4 and 5 July.
As the European Parliament takes over the presidency of the PA-UfM, European Parliament vice-president Pina Picierno will address participants at both meetings, outlining the incoming presidency’s priorities and highlighting Parliament's commitment to strengthening dialogue and cooperation across the Mediterranean region.
During the plenary session, MEPs and parliamentarians from PA-UfM member countries will exchange views on key issues, including parliamentary diplomacy, peace and stability in the Middle East, artificial intelligence, youth engagement and women's empowerment.
Ahead of the mission, Pina Picerno stated: "The agenda is ambitious: peace and stability in the Middle East, artificial intelligence, youth engagement and women’s empowerment — the defining challenges of our time, addressed together, across both shores of the Mediterranean.
"But this meeting carries special significance as the European Parliament will take over the presidency of the PA-UfM — a responsibility we embrace with a clear political vision: to make this assembly a stronger, more credible, and more impactful forum for the entire region.
"The Mediterranean is not a border. It is a shared space — and parliamentary diplomacy is how we build the trust needed to shape it together."
The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) is an intergovernmental organisation that brings together the European Union member states and 16 partner countries from the southern and eastern Mediterranean. It promotes dialogue, regional cooperation and joint initiatives to address shared challenges and foster stability, prosperity and integration across the region.
