On Wednesday, Ukrainian lawmakers approved President Volodymyr Zelensky's nomination of Rustem Umerov as a new defense minister after the resignation of Oleksiy Reznikov.
Umerov's appointment marked a significant change for Ukraine more than a year and a half into Russia's military operation and followed corruption scandals in the defense ministry.
Prime Minister Denys Shmygal said: "Rustem Umerov has become the new defense minister. His candidacy was supported by the Verkhovna Rada."
Senior lawmaker Yaroslav Zheleznyak said on social media that 338 out of 360 lawmakers present voted in favor of Umerov's nomination.
Zelensky said Umerov for the role calling for "new approaches" in Ukraine's defense ministry.
"We expect that the new minister will promptly start work and continue the defense sector reforms that have been initiated," Shmygal added.
