Parliament Approves EastMed Gas Forum, US Aid

The Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives approved Sunday a number of international agreements, including Presidential Decree No. 644 of 2020 regarding approval of the Charter of the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum.

The Charter of the EastMed Gas Forum was signed in Cairo on September 22.

The organization will serve as a market platform for natgas producers, consumers, and transit countries in the region to develop existing resources and develop the infrastructure for future exploitation.

The founding member states are Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Israel, Jordan, and Palestine. France had formally requested to join the forum as a member while the US asked to be a permanent observer.

The Committee also approved Presidential Decision No. 643 of 2020 regarding approval of the aid grant agreement between Egypt and the United States of America on comprehensive economic governance, signed in Cairo on September 30, 2019.

Another Presidential decree No. 660 on the Board of Governors of the African Development Fund was approved as well regarding the fifteenth replenishment of the fund’s resources, and Egypt’s subscription instrument for this renewal, according to the committee’s agenda.
