The Panamanian government has filed a formal complaint with the United Nations, responding to threats from former US President Donald Trump about reclaiming the Panama Canal.
The complaint coincides with an audit of a Hong Kong-affiliated company managing critical ports along the canal.
In its communication to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Panama highlighted concerns over violations of international principles safeguarding territorial sovereignty. It urged the UN to escalate the matter to the Security Council for consideration.
The complaint follows statements from Trump alleging foreign influence over the canal.
Trump claimed that the canal had fallen under significant external control, raising concerns about its strategic importance.
Panama’s Comptroller General announced a comprehensive audit of the Panama Ports Company, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings.
The company operates the Balboa and Cristobal ports at either end of the canal. The audit aims to verify compliance with concession agreements, particularly regarding revenue sharing and contributions to the Panamanian government.
President José Raúl Mulino reaffirmed the nation’s control and neutrality over the canal, dismissing suggestions of external influence. The government emphasized its commitment to maintaining the waterway’s independence and efficient operation.
