Panama will allow the deployment of US forces in areas near the Panama Canal and its surrounding regions, according to a new bilateral agreement released by the Panamanian government on Thursday.
The deal, however, rules out the establishment of permanent US military bases.
The agreement, signed by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Panamanian Minister of Public Security Frank Ábrego, grants US troops and private military contractors working with the United States permission to use designated locations, facilities, and areas for training exercises and humanitarian activities.
The Panama Canal, a crucial global trade route, is vital to international shipping, and the presence of US forces aims to enhance security in the region without establishing permanent military installations.
This agreement marks a significant step in strengthening security cooperation between Panama and the United States, while maintaining Panama’s long-standing position against hosting foreign military bases on its soil.
