Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas emphasized that halting the brutal war waged by Israeli forces on Gaza is essential for achieving security and stability in the region. He described the ongoing situation in Gaza as a stain on the conscience of the international community that must be immediately addressed.
In a speech marking the 60th anniversary of the Palestinian Revolution and the founding of the Fatah movement, reported by the Palestinian news agency WAFA, Abbas underscored that any efforts to ensure regional stability must begin with ending the aggression on Gaza. He called for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2735, which demands Israel's full withdrawal from Gaza and the assumption of responsibility in the territory by the State of Palestine, as is the case in the West Bank and Jerusalem.
Abbas also stressed the need to stop Israeli forces' attacks, settler violence in the West Bank, and assaults on Islamic and Christian holy sites. He reiterated that it is time for the Palestinian people to achieve freedom and independence by ending the occupation and establishing an independent state along the June 4, 1967, borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. He noted that it is unjust for Palestinians to remain the only people in the world under occupation.
The president reaffirmed that Gaza is an inseparable part of the occupied Palestinian territories, alongside the West Bank and Jerusalem. He highlighted the Palestinian people’s right to live in peace and dignity in their homeland, calling for full UN membership for Palestine and recognition by all nations as the optimal solution to ensure peace and stability for all states and peoples in the Middle East.
Abbas stressed the resilience of the Palestinian people, stating that despite displacement and suffering, they remain steadfast in their homeland, holding on to their legitimate rights grounded in international resolutions. He added that the Palestinian Revolution has united the people, preserved their identity, and transformed the Palestinian cause from a refugee issue into a political struggle for freedom and independence.
In his remarks, Abbas honored the martyrs, prisoners, and wounded who have sacrificed for the Palestinian cause, paying tribute to their steadfastness in defending Jerusalem, Palestinian identity, heritage, and sacred sites.
