Palestinian President Declares 30-Day State of Emergency

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a presidential decree on Friday declaring a state of emergency for a period of 30 days in the Palestinian territories.

Under the decree, the state of emergency will take effect from September 4, to confront the novel coronavirus, causing the COVID-19 disease.

This morning, it was announced that 116 new cases of coronavirus were recorded in the Gaza Strip, while 13 new cases of recovery were recorded.

The total number of infected people since last March reached 697, of which 603 were active infections, 89 recovered, and 5 deaths.

In addition, a government ministerial delegation arrived from Ramallah to the Gaza Strip, on Friday, headed by the Minister of Health, Mai Al-Kaila, via the Beit Hanoun crossing, to be informed of the needs and requirements of the sector in light of the outbreak of the coronavirus.

The Palestinian "Wafa" agency reported that, in addition to the Minister of Health, the delegation included Minister of Culture Atef Abu Seif, Minister of Women's Affairs Amal Hamad, Minister of Public Works and Housing Mohamed Ziyarah, and Minister of State for Entrepreneurship and Empowerment Osama El-Saadawi.

The delegation came to the Gaza Strip with instructions from President Abbas, who instructed to send 20 trucks loaded with medical drugs to Gaza hospitals, to overcome health difficulties and reduce the suffering of infected persons in light of the outbreak of the virus.
