Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour has called for urgent action by the international community to stop Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza, which he said has killed more than 60,000 people, including about 20,000 children.
Speaking at a UN Security Council session on Tuesday, Mansour urged for “an immediate cessation of Israel’s aggression and a full withdrawal from Gaza,” warning that Israel is “openly defying international will by declaring its intention to occupy the entire Gaza Strip, in flagrant violation of international law and UN resolutions.”
“There is no justification for killing over 60,000 Palestinians,” Mansour said, noting that the the world cannot remain silent any longer.
He also accused Israel of using the issue of captives held in Gaza as a pretext for its military campaign, while simultaneously detaining thousands of Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank. “The occupation is hiding behind the plight of the captives to mask its war crimes,” he said, calling for the immediate release of all detainees.
Mansour stressed that the UN Charter entrusts the international community with maintaining peace and security, adding, “It is time to act decisively to stop this aggression.”
