On Tuesday, Pakistan’s authorities announced that a man has tested positive for monkeypox, marking the first case of the disease in the country.

Health officials did not provide additional details about the man's case.

Officials said airport authorities and hospitals have been alerted to monitor more cases of the disease.

According to the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan, relatives of the man who tested positive have been examined and advised to self-isolate to ensure the virus does not spread.

Monkeypox is a rare but potentially serious viral disease that usually begins with a flu-like illness and swollen lymph nodes, then progresses to a rash.

Most people recover within weeks without requiring hospitalization.
