In a major political and human rights development, the European Parliament adopted a landmark resolution in Strasbourg by an overwhelming majority of 516 votes in favor, 14 against, and 32 abstentions, condemning Iran’s escalating repression and political executions while expressing solidarity with the Iranian people’s struggle for freedom, democracy, and human rights.

The resolution also called for an immediate halt to executions, the release of political prisoners, and the establishment of legal mechanisms to hold Iranian officials accountable for crimes committed against the Iranian people.

Afshin Alavi, member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), said in this regard: “The overwhelming vote in the European Parliament sends a clear political message to the Iranian regime that policies of execution and repression will no longer be met with silence or indifference. Europe is increasingly recognizing that what is happening in Iran is not a series of isolated human rights violations, but a systematic state policy designed to preserve power through internal terror.”

He emphasized that “the importance of this resolution lies not only in the scale of parliamentary support, but also in its political and legal substance. The European Parliament has gone beyond condemnation by explicitly calling for the application of universal jurisdiction, the establishment of a special tribunal on Iran, and accountability for crimes against humanity.”

Alavi added: “The resolution also reflects growing awareness that the Iranian regime uses executions as a political tool to suppress organization and public dissent, especially following waves of protests and the expanding role of Resistance Units inside Iran. The resolution’s explicit condemnation of secret executions in March and April 2026 confirms that these acts are part of a broader strategy of intimidation.

He noted that “the condemnation of internet shutdowns and the European call for secure internet access for the Iranian people acknowledge the regime’s efforts to isolate society and block information flows out of fear of popular uprisings.”

According to Alavi, “the resolution also sends an important political signal that any future engagement with Tehran must be conditioned on human rights, ending executions, releasing political prisoners, and ensuring accountability for abuses.”

In this context, attention is also turning to the major Iranian demonstration expected in Paris on June 20, 2026, with around 100,000 Iranians and supporters of freedom taking part. The event will underline growing international support for the Iranian people’s struggle and the demand for an end to executions and the establishment of a democratic republic.

Alavi concluded: “This European resolution is not the end of the road, but the beginning of a new phase of international pressure on the Iranian regime. The Iranian people increasingly see that their struggle for freedom is gaining stronger support within international institutions, and the era of impunity is approaching its end.”
