Unprecedented rainfall in Niger since June has claimed the lives of 339 people and left over a million affected, according to official reports on Tuesday.

The Nigerien News Agency, citing the Civil Protection Directorate under the Ministry of the Interior, reported that as of September 23, the floods resulted in 339 deaths and 383 injuries.

Additionally, 1,176,528 people have been affected by the disaster.

Earlier in September, the Ministry of the Interior had reported 273 deaths, 278 injuries, and more than 700,000 people impacted.

The floods have wreaked havoc across the country, including the capital, Niamey.

These floods, triggered by unusually heavy rains, have caused widespread destruction, displacing large numbers of people and raising concerns about food security, health, and infrastructure damage in one of the world’s poorest countries.

The government is working with international organizations to provide relief, but the scale of the disaster presents a significant challenge for local and global relief efforts.
