A government survey in Japan has found that more than half of teenage girls using generative artificial intelligence rely on it for personal advice, underscoring the growing role of AI in emotional and social decision-making among young users.

According to the Cabinet Office’s consumer panel survey, 52.4 percent of teenage girls who use AI said they consult it about personal worries, the highest rate across all age and gender groups.

The study also found that more than 30 percent of women in their 20s to 40s use AI for similar purposes, while usage among men remains lower overall, with the highest male figure recorded at 29.1 percent among those in their 30s.

The online survey, conducted in February, covered 1,442 generative AI users across a wide age range from teenagers to people in their 70s.

When asked about everyday uses of AI, 76.4 percent of respondents cited information search and research, followed by writing and editing tasks at 33.9 percent, and personal consultation at 23.3 percent.

While information retrieval was the dominant use across all demographics, personal advice ranked particularly high among teenage girls and women in their 20s to 40s.

Trust in AI-generated advice also appears significant. Around 38.6 percent of respondents said they either strongly or somewhat trust AI guidance on relationships and social interactions, rising to 63.1 percent among teenage girls.

Respondents also reported broader perceived benefits, including faster information gathering and improved productivity, while roughly 10 percent said AI use helped reduce feelings of loneliness.

However, some users expressed concern about overreliance, noting that frequent use of AI may reduce independent thinking and personal reflection.
