A devastating incident has unfolded off the coast of the Republic of Cape Verde, where more than 60 migrants are feared to have lost their lives.

The migrants had embarked on a perilous journey from Senegal in early July, aboard a vessel that was discovered this week, according to a statement by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Safa Msehli, the spokesperson for the organization, conveyed that 63 individuals are believed to have perished, while 38 migrants were successfully rescued from the vessel. Among the rescued are four children aged between 12 and 16 years old.

The boat was spotted in the Atlantic Ocean on Monday, approximately 150 nautical miles (277 kilometers) from the island of Sal, which is part of Cape Verde.

A Spanish fishing vessel informed the authorities of the archipelago, situated hundreds of kilometers away from the Senegalese coast.

In addition to the 38 survivors, the coast guard recovered seven bodies. The details shared by the survivors, as reported by the Senegalese Foreign Ministry and other sources, indicate that the boat had set sail from the Fass Bouye region in western Senegal on July 10th, carrying 101 passengers.

Based on this information, the number of individuals still missing stands at 56.
