In a recent visit to flood-stricken areas of Senegal, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye toured the eastern and northern regions, where devastating floods caused by the rising Senegal River have severely impacted local communities.
According to government reports, around 55,000 people across 51 villages and 44 other locations, mostly agricultural areas, were affected by the floods.
The affected regions include Tambacounda and Bakel in the east, as well as Matam and Saint-Louis in the north.
Heavy rains have caused significant damage, flooding over 1,000 hectares of fields planted with crops such as peppers, rice, and corn. These areas are particularly vulnerable as many of the residents rely heavily on agriculture for their livelihoods.
Minister and government spokesperson Amadou Moustapha Ndiaye Sarré, speaking to the press, emphasized the extensive destruction caused by the floods, which have left many families struggling to recover.
He added that Faye, elected in late March, visited the hardest-hit areas of Bakel to express his solidarity with the affected families.
The president took to social media to reiterate that the purpose of the visit was to show the government's commitment to assisting those impacted by the disaster.
