More than 43,000 people were displaced, according to the International Organization for Migration, as a result of the massive floods that swept eastern Libya, especially the city of Derna, less than two weeks ago.

Communications returned to the city of Derna on Thursday, after a 24-hour interruption.

The International Organization for Migration said the tragedy caused the displacement of 43,059 people.

The lack of water supplies may have prompted many of the displaced people inside Derna to leave it, to head to other cities in the east and west of the country," it added.

The organization noted that the urgent needs of the displaced include “food supplies, fresh water, mental health, and psychosocial support.”

The floods killed 3,351 people, according to the latest official provisional toll, announced by the Minister of Health in the eastern Libyan region, Othman Abdel Jalil, on Tuesday evening.

But humanitarian organizations and Libyan authorities fear that the number of victims is much higher, due to the number of missing people estimated at thousands.

Rescue crews continued their efforts to find the bodies of the missing, especially at sea, after the floods swept away entire neighborhoods.

On Thursday, the Tripoli government announced that bodies had been spotted in an area extending over an area of about 100 kilometers between Derna and Al-Bayda, located to the west.
