The United Nations reports that over 31,000 people were affected by severe flooding in Afghanistan, highlighting growing climate risks and urgent infrastructure needs.

More than 31,000 people in Afghanistan have been affected by severe flooding, according to the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, highlighting the country’s increasing vulnerability to climate-related disasters.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the UN agency warned that repeated flooding events are placing growing pressure on communities across the country.

The organisation stressed the urgent need for resilient infrastructure capable of withstanding natural disasters, as extreme weather events become more frequent.

It added that efforts are underway in cooperation with the Afghanistan Humanitarian Trust Fund, an initiative linked to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, to help communities better withstand future shocks.

The warning follows devastating floods earlier in 2026, which caused widespread damage across several provinces.

Officials from the Taliban’s disaster management authority said that flooding over the past 10 days has resulted in 77 deaths and left a further 137 people injured.

The situation underscores mounting humanitarian concerns in Afghanistan, where infrastructure challenges and climate pressures are increasing the risk to vulnerable populations.
