Over 200 members of Congress, almost exclusively Democrats called on Saturday for the removal of the U.S.President Donald Trump from office, according to NBC News.

This came after a violent mob of his supporters breached the U.S. Capitol hours after he spurred supporters to stand up for him amid his baseless claims that the election was stolen from him.

They were 201 members of the House and 37 Senators, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The Republican, Illinois Representative Adam Kinzinger, and two independent Senators caucus with the Democrats, Angus King, and Bernie Sanders, have also joined those calls.

Some in the group support Congress impeaching the president, with others supporting the Cabinet remove him from office under the 25th Amendment, and others more broadly demanding he leaves office immediately.

White House spokesman Gad Derry said that holding Trump accountable, with a few days remaining until the end of his term, will only exacerbate the pision in the country.

On his part, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said in a tweet on his Twitter account: "President Trump moved the country in the right direction last night with his statement. The radical liberal Democrats’ never-ending desire to keep the conflict going needs to be addressed by President-elect Biden."

He added: "I hope that President-elect Joe Biden will have the same views and speak out so that we can proceed with an orderly transition of power."

These statements came as Democrats in Congress launched a movement to remove Trump from power immediately, after the violence in the Capitol building last Wednesday.
