Police in California are investigating the theft of more than 1,000 items from a museum collection, including metal jewelry and everyday objects such as sports trophies that tell the story of the Golden State.
The burglary occurred in the early hours of 15 October at an off-site storage facility belonging to the Oakland Museum of California, according to a statement released by the Oakland Police Department on Wednesday.
Museum Director Lori Fogarty said on Thursday that the investigation is being conducted publicly since the stolen artefacts may appear in second-hand markets, antique shops, or pawn stores. She added that the loss is not only for the museum but also for the community, expressing hope that the public will help recover the missing items.
Fogarty noted that the incident appeared to be a spontaneous crime rather than a planned theft targeting specific works of art. She explained that the thieves likely found a way into the building, took what they could easily access, and fled the scene.
