Airlines cancelled more than 100 flights across Turkey on January 1 after heavy snowfall and strong winds disrupted air travel in large parts of the country, airline officials confirmed.

Turkish Airlines said it cancelled 50 flights, while low-cost carrier AJet grounded 64 services. The vast majority of the affected flights were domestic, as adverse weather conditions made operations unsafe at several regional airports.

Authorities also issued warnings over worsening weather in the Marmara Sea region, which includes Istanbul. Snowfall was forecast to reach the metropolis overnight, raising concerns about further disruptions at Turkey’s busiest airports.

On New Year’s Day, 42 of Turkey’s 81 provinces were placed under a yellow weather alert, indicating potentially hazardous conditions. The Turkish State Meteorological Service forecast widespread snowfall, strong winds across much of the country, and storm conditions in parts of the Black Sea region.

Weather-related disruptions are expected to continue as winter conditions intensify, with airlines urging passengers to check flight statuses before travelling.
