After a 441-day wait, the pandemic-delayed 93rd Oscars took place Sunday night, witnessing a historical evening packed with surprises, not just around the winners but the event itself.

Hollywood’s biggest night was held in person and broadcast live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre and Union Station in Los Angeles. All nominees and guests had to have a minimum of two coronavirus PCR tests performed by the Academy’s vendor and a total of three tests in the week leading up to the telecast.

The ceremony kicked off without an opening monologue, no live orchestra, or any of the glitzy performances that are usually held to fill the show. The event lasted for three hours.

Performances of the five Oscar-nominated best original songs were performed in a pre-recorded presentation broadcast in a two-hour pre-show ahead of the main event on the Disney-owned ABC network.

“The Father” star Anthony Hopkins nabbed actor, making him the oldest winner of an acting Oscar ever, and Frances McDormand won the best actress for “Nomadland”.

This was McDormand’s third-best actress Oscar. She earned her first for "Fargo" in 1997 and second for "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" in 2018.

Meanwhile, Daniel Kaluuya has won the Oscar for best-supporting actor for his role in “Judas and the Black Messiah” and Yuh-Jung Youn claimed the Oscar for best supporting actress for her role in “Minari”, becoming the first Korean to do so.

Nine actors of color were nominated for the Oscars but only two won. Additionally, more women were nominated in 2021 than in any previous year.

Furthermore,  Chloé Zhao the director of “Nomadland” had also made history, becoming the second woman and the first woman of color to win an Oscar for directing. The movie, which portraits a woman who adopts a nomadic lifestyle, also won best picture.

H.E.R.'s song beat out fellow nominees "Husavik" from "Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga".

Furthermore, Pixar's "Soul" won the Academy Award for the best-animated feature, delivering a record third Oscar in the category to director Pete Docter, and the first Oscar to producer Dana Murra.
