"Save the Children", an international organization concerned with the welfare of young people, has announced that one out of every four children in European Union countries is at risk of poverty.

A new report authored by experts of the organization found that the number of children pushed to the brink of poverty rose by 200,000 in 2021, to 19.4 million.

The organization explained that the increase in the cost of living, the climate crisis, and the "COVID-19" pandemic was behind this "alarming increase".

The numbers are "painful" and in Germany, more than two million children live in poverty, said Eric Grosshaus, Child Poverty and Social Inequality Awareness Director at Save the Children Germany.

The report showed that children with migrant backgrounds, refugees, asylum seekers, and unregistered and unaccompanied children were among the hardest hit. In Italy, for example, 32.4 percent of immigrants live in poverty.

Spain and Romania came out on top, with 33.4 percent and 41.5 percent, respectively, for children at risk of poverty or social exclusion.
