OpenAI is preparing to launch a new personal smart device that relies entirely on voice interaction, signaling a major shift away from traditional screen-based technology.

The US artificial intelligence company said it has merged several internal teams, including engineering, product and research, to develop a next-generation voice model designed specifically for hardware built around spoken interaction.

According to the company, its engineering teams have spent the past two months redesigning voice models in preparation for releasing a fully voice-driven smart device within about a year.

The new OpenAI voice model is expected to power a range of devices, such as smart glasses or screenless smart speakers. The aim is to reduce reliance on multiple screens that consume time and attention, while offering a more natural, high-quality and interactive voice experience.

With the move, OpenAI is seeking to evolve from a software-focused company into a consumer electronics player, embedding artificial intelligence more deeply into everyday life. By enabling users to complete tasks, access information and communicate through voice alone, the company hopes to redefine how people interact with technology, without needing to look at a phone or screen.
