An oil tanker was reportedly sunk on Sunday after being targeted while attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian state television, in an incident that has heightened concerns over maritime security in one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.

Iranian media said the vessel was attacked after attempting to transit the strategic waterway despite warnings issued by Iranian forces. A social media account affiliated with Iranian state media published an image it said showed the tanker following the attack.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported that dozens of commercial vessels have gathered in waters off the coasts of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, avoiding entry into the Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions. At least 100 additional oil tankers were said to be waiting near the coasts of the United Arab Emirates and Oman outside the strait.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, linking the Arabian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean. Roughly 30 percent of global oil production and about 20 percent of international energy consumption passes through the narrow waterway, along with around a quarter of global liquefied natural gas trade.

Any disruption in the strait poses a direct threat to global energy supplies and international trade, raising fears of potential market volatility and broader regional instability. Authorities and shipping companies are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
