The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United Nations opened the 2026 International Conference on Jerusalem in Cairo on Saturday, bringing together diplomats, officials and experts to discuss the future of the holy city and prospects for a just and lasting peace.
Speaking on behalf of OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha, Assistant Secretary-General Ambassador Dawas Dawas reaffirmed that East Jerusalem is the capital of a future Palestinian state and an integral part of the territories occupied since 1967.
Dawas accused Israel of pursuing policies that alter Jerusalem's historical, legal and demographic character through settlement expansion, land confiscation, home demolitions and restrictions on holy sites. He also called on the international community to increase pressure to halt such measures and advance a two-state solution, including broader recognition of the State of Palestine and support for its full U.N. membership.
