On the 78th anniversary of the Nakba (the Catastrophe), the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) issued a powerful statement reaffirming the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.

The organization called on the international community to take decisive action to end the decades-long occupation and ensure the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state.

Commemorating a National Tragedy

The OIC emphasized that the Nakba remains a painful milestone in human history, symbolizing the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and the ongoing struggle for self-determination. The statement highlighted that the "spirit of the Palestinian people remains unbroken" despite generations of hardship and systemic challenges.

Demands for Justice and Sovereignty

In its communique, the Jeddah-based organization stressed the following key points:

The Right of Return: Reaffirming the legitimate right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes as mandated by international law and UN Resolution 194.

Two-State Solution: Calling for the establishment of an independent State of Palestine based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

End to Illegal Settlements: Urging an immediate halt to all settlement expansion activities, which the OIC describes as a primary obstacle to sustainable peace.

A Call to Global Action

The OIC urged the United Nations Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities by enforcing international resolutions. The organization also commended the resilience of the Palestinian people and pledged to continue its diplomatic efforts on the global stage to mobilize support for the Palestinian cause.

"The Nakba is not just a memory of the past, but a call to action for the future," the statement concluded, noting that stability in the Middle East is inextricably linked to a just and comprehensive solution for Palestine.
