His Excellency President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, inaugurated the 2026 Regional Environment Summit, held in Astana. His Excellency Ambassador Aftab Ahmad Khokhar, Assistant Secretary-General for Science and Technology at the OIC, represented His Excellency the Secretary-General of the OIC, Mr. Hussein Ibrahim Taha.
In his address, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized that the summit was being held at a time when many developing countries are facing challenges in combating climate change. He added that many countries are suffering from water scarcity, desertification, and other extreme weather events.
Heads of State and Government from seven Central Asian countries, as well as others, delivered speeches at the opening session. On the sidelines of the summit, His Excellency Mr. Yermek Kosherbayev, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, received Ambassador Khokhar, who visited the headquarters of the Islamic Organization for Food Security and held fruitful talks with its Director General, His Excellency Ambassador Berik Aryn.
