The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Group at UNESCO marked the International Day to Combat Islamophobia with a high-level roundtable focusing on the role of education, culture and dialogue in addressing religious intolerance.
The event, held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris under the theme “Combating Islamophobia: Advancing Human Rights through Education, Culture and Dialogue,” brought together international experts and diplomats to discuss the causes and impacts of Islamophobia.
Participants highlighted the disproportionate effects of anti-Muslim discrimination on women and stressed the importance of combating misinformation through education and cultural initiatives while promoting dialogue among communities.
Mohammad Bashgi, the OIC Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Islamophobia, delivered remarks on behalf of the organization, reaffirming the OIC’s commitment to countering religious hatred and promoting mutual understanding.
Organizers said the gathering — the first event of its kind hosted by the OIC Group at UNESCO — concluded with a Ramadan iftar that reflected the cultural diversity of the organization’s member states.
