The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Tuesday issued a forceful condemnation of recent terrorist attacks in Nigeria’s Zamfara State that left dozens of civilians dead.

The attacks, which occurred on Feb. 21, involved the "heinous" killing of residents and the mass abduction of women and children in the country’s north-western region, according to a statement from the OIC General Secretariat.

The Secretary-General expressed "full solidarity" with the Nigerian government and called for the "immediate and unconditional release" of all those kidnapped. Reaffirming the organization’s stance against violent extremism, the OIC offered condolences to the victims' families and reiterated its support for Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to restore security and stability.

Zamfara has long been a flashpoint for violence involving armed gangs, often referred to locally as bandits, who carry out killings and kidnappings for ransom.
