The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has strongly condemned reported plans by Colombia to open an embassy in occupied Jerusalem, calling the move a violation of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
In a statement issued Thursday, the OIC General Secretariat said the decision would mark a departure from Colombia's longstanding support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and could negatively affect its relations with OIC member states.
The organization said establishing an embassy in occupied Jerusalem contravenes U.N. Security Council Resolutions 476 and 478, which reject measures aimed at altering the city's legal status and call on countries to refrain from locating diplomatic missions there.
The OIC urged Colombia to reverse the decision, support international efforts toward a two-state solution, and uphold its obligations under the U.N. Charter and international law.
