US military officials revealed that the United States will start training Ukrainian forces to use American (M1 Abrams) tanks in Germany within the next few weeks.
The New York Times (NYT) reported that this is a major step in arming Kyiv as part of its efforts to regain territory from Russia.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was expected to make the announcement Friday morning during a meeting with allies at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, according to the newspaper.
The military officials said that 31 tanks are expected to arrive in Germany to start a training program for Ukrainian forces that are expected to take ten weeks and that the tanks could reach the battlefields in Ukraine by next fall.
