The mayor of Miami announced his candidacy in the 2024 US presidential race, joining a crowded race of Republican candidates, all of whom are still being led by former President Donald Trump.
The New York Times (NYT) said that Francis Suarez, who served as Mayor of Miami for two terms, announced his official entry into the race Thursday, and presents himself as a new face in the Republican Party.
Suarez is 45 years old in a race led by the seventieth Trump. His elected officials are white.
In a speech at the Reagan Library in California on Thursday night, Suarez announced his candidacy, saying he believes America remains a shining city on a hill to which the eyes of the world turn, and its promise must be restored.
Suarez was elected mayor of Miami in 2017 with 86% of the vote and was re-elected in 2021 with 79% of the vote, which a huge difference is achieved thanks to almost no opposition, as the Miami mayoral election is officially non-partisan.
